Radio 2’s Sally Traffic Offers Lorry Drivers A Welcome Break

May 19 | 2014

Sally Traffic, from BBC Radio 2, was at Welcome Break’s South Mimms service station, off junction 23 of the M25 in Hertfordshire on Wednesday to celebrate the motorway service operator’s first ever National Truckers Appreciation Week.

Welcome Break launched National Truckers Appreciation Week on Monday 12th May 2014 to recognise the UK’s estimated 300,000 lorry drivers, and the huge contribution they make to the country.

Lorry drivers who stopped off at any Welcome Break service station nationwide between 6am and 10am enjoyed a free bacon sandwich courtesy of Welcome Break. Furthermore, the lorry drivers who visited the Truck Stop at South Mimms Welcome Break were also served a free piping hot cup of tea or coffee by Sally Traffic, to enjoy with their bacon sandwich.

Sally Traffic was at South Mimms all morning, inviting truckers to pose for a Sally Selfie and finding out about their tales of the road and favourite songs to drive to. The first 50 lorry drivers who met Sally at South Mimms also received a special Trucker Love mug.

Sally said, “Through my time as a radio traffic reporter I know how much truckers contribute to our economy and industry, and it’s high time they were shown the appreciation they deserve. I really enjoyed meeting all the lorry drivers at Welcome Break South Mimms this morning and treating them to a delicious bacon roll and a cuppa – it was certainly worth the early start!”

Rod McKie, CEO of Welcome Break, added: “Without a doubt, truckers are the unsung heroes of our roads, so we felt they deserved to be celebrated. After receiving so much feedback from those who use our sites, we decided it was time to treat the lorry drivers of the UK and start engaging with them in order to improve their visits to us. There was a great atmosphere at Welcome Break South Mimms this morning and we know the truckers all really enjoyed meeting Sally.”
