Chaotic scenes in Calais as truckers battle heat, strikers and illegal immigrants

There are chaotic scenes on both sides of the Channel today as French strikers prevented vehicles reaching the ferry port and rail tunnel in Calais. Hundreds of illegal immigrants are threatening truck drivers and breaking into vehicles in an attempt to stow away and reach the UK.  Matt De-Machen, Managing Director of Matthew James Removals has been in the 13km queue for over eight hours.  “We’ve been sitting here in 36 degree heat all day with no food or water, it’s absolute mayhem and no one is lifting a finger to help us,” said Matt. “I’ve got six of my trucks here in Calais and one over in Operation Stack, stuck on the M20.  “I have no idea when we’ll get home and there is no information or help from anyone. I reckon there must be at least 3,500 trucks sitting on the A26 trying to reach the tunnel.”
