A coalition of logistics leaders from the Alliance of Logistics Trade Associations (ALTA) gathered in Central London recently to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing the UK freight and logistics industry.
The meeting focused on skills, trade, infrastructure, costs, and sustainability, with members calling for stronger collaboration and a unified voice to government.
The sector-wide skills shortage remains a critical issue. ALTA members agreed to campaign for greater access to the apprenticeship levy to expand training opportunities and pledged continued support for Generation Logistics, alongside a new collaborative driver-focused campaign.
On trade and borders, participants emphasised reframing discussions around economic growth and resilience, highlighting the need for robust but streamlined processes. They also advocated for faster release times and the adoption of digitalisation and AI to reduce friction.
Infrastructure was another priority, with calls for accelerated investment in the Lower Thames Crossing, Heathrow Airport expansion, and the A14/Orwell Bridge - all seen as vital to facilitating legitimate trade. Rising operational costs, including the recent increase in National Insurance contributions, were flagged as additional pressures.
Members reaffirmed their commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation, but stressed the need for coordinated government support, particularly around bridging fuels, energy supply, and net zero strategies.
Phil Roe, Chair of ALTA, praised the collaborative spirit of the meeting, hosted by BIFA’s Director General, Steve Parker, saying: “ALTA was established to facilitate a collective voice for the freight and logistics sector. Its success will be defined by the level at which freight is considered in cross-government strategies and decisions.”
ALTA represents 12 trade bodies including BIFA, the RHA, Logistics UK, UK Warehousing Association and others. Together, they aim to ensure logistics is recognised as central to economic growth and resilience.
