Bishop’s Move has completed a complex, multi-phase, relocation programme in Oxford, supporting the phased move into the new Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Arts and Humanities as part of a wider campus transformation.

Delivered over six weeks, the project involved relocating 12 academic faculties, six libraries and the internationally recognised Bate Musical Instrument Museum from 16 buildings across six sites. The work was carried out within live operational environments and to a tightly coordinated schedule, with Bishop’s Move completing 19 phased relocations designed to minimise disruption to teaching, research and day-to-day administration.

Working in close collaboration with University Estates, project managers CPC, departmental leads, IT teams and third-party contractors, the Bishop’s Move team managed the packing, transport and reinstallation of a substantial volume of specialist assets. This included more than 4,000 linear metres of academic books and files, 571 PCs, extensive AV equipment, and 3,800 linear metres of library collections consolidated into a single central facility.

Historic items were relocated from the Bate Musical Instrument MuseumA major element of the programme was the relocation of the Bate Musical Instrument Museum, which required specialist handling and protection of over 2,000 historic instruments, some dating back to the 17th century. Items moved included 24 harpsichords and clavichords, the Javanese Gamelan Orchestra, and more than 40 oil paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. All assets were packed using bespoke materials and documented inventory processes to ensure full traceability and protection throughout.

Deliveries were made into a newly constructed building while multiple contractors remained on site, adding further logistical and safety considerations. Following completion of the move phases, Bishop’s Move also provided post-move support, allocating dedicated teams to assist staff with unpacking, final placement of collections and furniture reconfiguration.

David Taylor, Project Manager at Bishop’s Move, said the relocation required “detailed planning, flexibility and close collaboration”, enabling each phase to be delivered safely and on schedule while protecting critical academic and cultural assets.
