The BAR Young Movers take on Cambridge

Dec 06 | 2022

The BAR Young Movers came together in Cambridge in October for the group’s annual conference. Around 70 under 40s, plus invited guests, gathered in the comfort of the University Arms Hotel alongside the educational elite and architectural wonder of one of the UK’s iconic university cities, to swap ideas, learn and enjoy each other’s company. The event proved to be successful and enjoyable.

The Young Movers CouncilThe business sessions took place off site at the DS Smith factory just outside the city.  DS Smith is a paper and packaging manufacturer that turns over £7.3 billion a year and operates in 37 countries.  Its factory manufactures 1.3 million boxes a day with the company able to recover used boxes, recycle the materials and make new boxes in just 14 days.

Ian Studd, Director General of BAR, offered a brief introduction.  He said that he wished that the Young Movers had been around when he started in the business, but that environment wasn’t available at the time. “I envy you that, and the fact that it really works,” he said.  He said that he was particularly impressed with the way they continue to communicate throughout the year, not just at conferences. “That is exactly what this group needs to do, to grow your own peer group, expand your knowledge and learn together so we can all benefit.”

The business sessions were hosted by Deputy Chairman Calvin Tickner.  Calvin first introduced the team from DS Smith: Amy Strudwick offered some market insights and highlighted the importance of sustainability; Robert Smith, Senior Account Manager gave some background to the company; and Samantha Upham presented the company's sustainability strategy.
