Keeping sustainability reporting “simple”

At the recent FIDI conference, Magali Horbert advised movers to keep sustainability reporting simple.

Magali Horbert, Sustainability and Communications Manager at FIDI (FIDI Global Alliance), took the opportunity at the FIDI conference in Dubrovnik to talk on her favourite topic: sustainability.

Over the last few years Magali has become a champion for the cause and has made a significant contribution to the understanding of sustainability throughout the international moving industry.

In this presentation, she focused on sustainability reporting and wanted to encourage companies to make a start.

“An imperfect ‘something’ is better than a perfect ‘nothing’,” she said, adding, “By just starting you will be way ahead of your competition. So don't be afraid of starting somewhere.”

She began by walking the delegates through some of the sustainability lexicon such as:

  • ESG which refers to environmental, social and governance issues which vary depending on each company’s type of activity;
  • Carbon Footprint that covers all the emissions linked to a company’s operations: Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3;
  • Materiality: how your actions affect others;
  • Double Materiality: how the actions of others affect you – such as the growth of Low Emission Zones in cities.   Magali suggested companies should start with a simple materiality assessment from which FIDI has developed guidelines to help.

Another key acronym is CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) from the EU. This requires large companies to report their sustainability data and, although this doesn’t affect the moving industry directly, indirectly it does because those large companies need data from their suppliers to create their reports.  FEDEMAC (the European Movers Federation) is currently developing a template to help with CSRD reporting which it will share with FIDI members (planned to be ready in September).  In return, FIDI will give FEDEMAC members access to its Carbon Calculator.

Magali was keen to emphasise that, although the apparent focus on sustainability might have reduced in recent months, the requirements were not going away ...
