Celebrating its first century

Wardle & Keach, one of the UK’s oldest removals and storage companies, is celebrating 100 years of incorporation this year.

Hannah Collins and James HenryNorthamptonshire-based removals and storage specialists Wardle & Keach International Ltd celebrated a major milestone in October - 100 years of its incorporation with Companies House. Officially registered on 8 October 1925, the company stands today as one of the UK’s oldest continuously operating removals and storage businesses.

While the centenary marks an extraordinary achievement, the company’s heritage stretches back even further. Its story began in 1890, when two Kettering-based coal haulage entrepreneurs, Albert Keach and George Wardle, joined forces. Their partnership quickly expanded into furniture removals during the pre-war years - laying the foundation for a business that has remained a trusted name in the industry for well over a century.

A legacy of family and growth
Since 1986, the company has been owned and operated by the Henry family, who have carried forward the founders’ legacy while steering Wardle & Keach into the modern age.

Over nearly four decades of stewardship, the family has overseen significant expansion - including the acquisition of several removal companies, the development of a custom-built storage facility at its Little Houghton headquarters, and the introduction of self-storage, commercial relocation, European and international moves, packing materials supply, and professional packing services.

Today, Wardle & Keach provides a range of moving and storage solutions for homeowners and businesses across Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, and beyond. The company says that it “remains committed to offering local, national, and international moves with the same personal, professional service that has defined its reputation for generations.”

Carrying forward its heritage
For Sue Henry, Director and Co-Owner, the centenary represents far more than a date in the company register – “it’s a celebration of people, principles, and perseverance.”

Says Sue: “When we first took over Wardle & Keach in 1986 from the Wardle family, we knew we were buying more than just a business - we were becoming part of a legacy. We were struck by the original company slogan sign written on the vehicles: ‘Our business is moving.’ It reflected not just what we do, but how we think - always moving forward. That belief still holds true today: if you don’t move forward, you fall back.”

“Over the years,” she continues, “we’ve adapted, modernised, and grown, but always with our core values at heart. The world has changed, and so have we - but our commitment to the people we serve has never wavered.”

The Wardle and Keach story began in 1890 when Albert Keach and George Wardle joined forcesTradition meets innovation
For Hannah Collins, Group Manager and family member, the company’s enduring success lies in its ability to balance respect for tradition with an openness to change.

“While we honour the traditions and values that have shaped our business, we also recognise that change is essential,” Hannah explains. “Customer needs, technologies, and markets continue to evolve, and so do we. By building on our strong foundations and embracing new tools, ideas, and services, we’re able to better serve our customers.”

She continues: “That balance between tradition and innovation allows us to deliver the consistency our customers expect, while staying ready for the demands of tomorrow.”

The secret to success
At the heart of Wardle & Keach’s longevity is a sense of family - both in ownership and ethos. This commitment to personal service, loyalty, and community has underpinned every chapter of the company’s history.

James Henry, Group Manager, reflects on what drives the business forward: “Our mission has always stayed the same: to offer a fully comprehensive, value-for-money service tailored to each customer. Our family roots help us maintain pride in forming long-term client relationships. Customer service is always at the forefront of everything we do, and we strive to deliver that consistently to every client.”

He adds: “We want to thank every customer, colleague, and friend who’s been part of this incredible journey. Here’s to preserving our traditions while embracing the future — and to the next 100 years of Wardle & Keach!”
