Payment systems provider Blink Payment investigates the real price of manual processes for removals and storage companies.

Some UK small businessess spend the equivalent of one week per month chasing paymentsIn an industry built on trust and personal service, removals and storage companies have traditionally relied on familiar processes.

While the moving process hasn't changed in decades, customer expectations around payment have. The gap between traditional payment practices and modern convenience is growing and costing businesses more than many realise.

The real price of manual processes
Ask any removals business about administrative frustrations - and payment collection almost always comes up. The routine is familiar: sending invoices, following up by phone, manually reconciling bank transfers, and having uncomfortable conversations about overdue balances.

The true cost is substantial. Research by NatWest found that 31% of UK small businesses spend between 21 to 30 hours per month chasing late payments. That's almost a full working week each month. The average UK SME is chasing five outstanding invoices at any one time, with QuickBooks reporting that UK small businesses are owed an average of £21,400 in late payments.

Many firms also take card payments over the phone, posing security risks that are often underestimated. Staff may write down card details or enter them into systems that are not PCI DSS or GDPR compliant. A single data breach can undo decades of trust, especially for family businesses rooted in their communities.
