EC consultation on road charging

Sep 04 | 2012

The European Commission is undertaking a public consultation in connection with the Charging of the use of road infrastructure.

Have your say

The consultation period is from 10/08/2012 to 4/11/2012.  Anyone interested can have their say by completing either a long or short survey on http://ec.europa.eu

This public consultation is to explore the scope for possible new European Commission initiatives on road charging.  Back in 2008 the Commission adopted the Communication on a strategy for what it called the ‘internalisation of external costs’ which is designed to ensure that both the user and the polluter pays the marginal cost for the use of infrastructure and for noise, pollution and congestion.

Contributions can also be made by email to: move-road-charging@ec.europe.eu or by post to: European Commission DG MOVE, Unit D.3 – Land Transport, DM28 – 4/71 B-1049 Brussels.

The background notes can be read at http://ec.europa.eu/transport/road/consultations/doc/2012-11-04-road-charging/2012-11-04-background-document.pdf which explains the context of this consultation, before answering the questionnaire.

The long questionnaire is available at http://ec.europa.eu/yourvoice/ipm/forms/dispatch?form=chargingroadinfra. It contains 56, mainly multiple choice questions, and touches upon all the details of the identified problems.

The short version is available at http://ec.europa.eu/yourvoice/ipm/forms/dispatch?form=chargingroadshort.  The short version only has 16 questions. These have been chosen in a way to allow respondents to give their opinion on the main topics of the consultation, without entering into the technical details.
