Changes to digital tachographs

Sep 11 | 2012

The EU Commission has introduced a number of changes to digital tachographs.

These design changes are being implemented in two generations, more commonly referred to as 2nd generation and 3rd generation digital tachographs.

Second generation tachographs were implemented from 1 October, 2011.

Any tachograph activated from 1 October, 2012, must be a third generation tachograph and is required to have improved security features.

There is no requirement to retrospectively apply this Regulation, so vehicles already fitted with a 1st or 2nd generation tachograph may continue to use them.
