MoveCover calls for greater competition

The removals and storage sector is facing renewed uncertainty after what Neil Price, Commercial Manager at MoveCover Insurance, reports as a major insurer’s decision to withdraw from the UK market for all brokers except one - a move that reduces choice in an already restricted landscape.

According to Price, the insurer, long regarded as a central provider in removals and transit cover, has effectively left the sector with access to that market through a single broker. He says the development raises serious industry concerns around reduced competition, limited ability to benchmark value, and the ongoing problem of inconsistent or unclear renewal terms.

Price told The Mover that the latest shift reinforces the importance of transparency and a competitive environment that allows movers to secure insurance based on suitability and service quality.

“When one insurer decides to work exclusively through a single broker, it removes competition from the marketplace,” he said. “That’s not healthy for movers or their customers. Insurance should work around the needs of the business, not the other way around.”

Price believes that the withdrawal continues a broader pattern of consolidation within removals insurance. Over several years, he says, many businesses have found themselves locked into products that no longer align with modern risk profiles or evolving service models - often without the ability to explore alternatives or negotiate better terms.

“We’re already hearing from companies insured with this provider who don’t want to move to the suggested broker,” he explained. “They want reassurance that they have options - and they do.”

MoveCover was founded to reintroduce choice and openness into the market. Backed by an A-rated insurer, its Marine Transit Programme offers transparent pricing, flexible coverage and adaptable product structures designed around operational realities.

“Choice is essential,” Price stressed. “Movers deserve access to competitive, well-structured products without being locked into one channel.”
