In-Excess Removals celebrates its 30th anniversary in March 2026In-Excess Removals Ltd, based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, celebrates its 30th anniversary in March 2026, marking three decades of removals and storage services delivered with a strong commitment to quality and community support.

Founded in March 1996 by Steve Yates and his partner Sally Matcham, the company grew from humble beginnings: one vehicle, long days, late nights and a determination to build a better future for their young family. Neither founder came from an academic background, but they say that their resilience and work ethic became the foundations of a business that has steadily expanded. Steve, who recalls being told at school he “wouldn’t amount to much”, has long believed that “building a business is like building a house: start with strong foundations, and do things properly”.

From those early days, In-Excess has developed into a fleet of 21 vans and HGVs with a growing team, offering local, national and international moves alongside storage solutions. The company credits its progress to consistent customer satisfaction and to a long-standing team that has grown with the business.

Lee, who joined as an agency porter in 1999 and is now Fleet General Manager, has seen the fleet increase from four vehicles to 21. He notes rising customer expectations, tighter regulations and increased “man and van” competition as key industry changes. Office Manager Louise, with 23 years’ service, highlights the pride the team takes in operations, staff culture and seeing the company’s distinctive lorries on the road. Long-term driver Scott, who started at 16, describes the workplace as “part of a family”.

The next generation is also helping shape the future. Steve’s daughter Richenda joined in 2019 as a virtual surveyor, supporting the rollout of virtual surveys that streamline planning and improve customer convenience.

A BAR member since 1999 and backed by strong Which? Trusted Trader reviews, In-Excess also continues to give back, donating furniture and goods to local charities. As Steve puts it, “Our reputation is our future” - and the business is inviting the community to join the celebrations."
