The Road Haulage Association (RHA) is calling on the logistics industry to urge MPs to support new measures to combat freight crime.
Ahead of the second reading of the Freight Crime Bill on 12 September, the RHA has launched an online tool for contacting MPs.
The Bill, proposed by MP Rachel Taylor, seeks to establish a dedicated crime code for freight theft. Currently, high-value cargo theft is recorded in the same category as minor vehicle thefts, limiting police insight and resource allocation. In 2024 alone, over £111 million in goods were stolen - up 63% on the previous year.
The RHA also calls for stricter sentencing and £6 million in annual government funding for the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS), currently funded by industry alone.
Freight crime, often linked to organised gangs, disrupts supply chains and increases costs.
