Volvo Trucks has announced a world-first innovation for the heavy-duty sector with the launch of stop/start engine technology integrated into its latest generation I-Roll system, designed to deliver further reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The new feature forms part of Volvo’s wider decarbonisation strategy and was available for order on the Volvo FH and FH Aero models with 13-litre diesel engines from November 2025.
Building on the success of its existing I-See and I-Roll technologies, the system uses real-time road and topographical data to temporarily switch off the engine when a suitable downhill gradient is identified, activating at speeds above 60 km/h. With the engine off, the truck consumes no fuel and generates zero tailpipe emissions. Volvo says the feature can deliver up to a 1% reduction in fuel use and CO2 emissions on top of existing aerodynamic and efficiency gains.
The development follows the Volvo FH Aero’s win in the 2025 Green Truck Award, demonstrating the impact of the manufacturer’s fuel-saving innovations. Volvo’s latest aerodynamic cab - introduced in 2024 - has already shown significant improvements in efficiency.
