The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced two new pilot programs designed to provide greater flexibility for commercial drivers, with the aim of improving quality of life on the road while maintaining safety.
The Split Duty Period pilot program will allow participating drivers to pause their 14-hour driving window for a period of 30 minutes to three hours. The study will evaluate whether this added flexibility helps drivers better manage fatigue and productivity.
The Flexible Sleeper Berth pilot program will examine additional options for dividing the required 10 hours of off-duty time. Beyond the existing “8/2” and “7/3” splits, drivers will be able to test “6/4” and “5/5” configurations. Data collected will assess the effects of these patterns on rest, fatigue, and road safety.
Both initiatives are part of a broader DOT package aimed at supporting the trucking industry through practical regulatory reforms, expanded parking capacity, and investment in driver resources.
Pilot testing protocols are scheduled to begin in early 2026, with more than 500 drivers expected to participate. Notices for both programs are available for public comment, allowing industry stakeholders to provide feedback before implementation.
